About us

The Blue Flag Program is an education program for sustainable development, promoted in Portugal by the Blue Flag Association of Europe, the Portuguese section of the Foundation for Environmental Education.

This award aims to educate for sustainable development in coastal, river and lake beaches, recreational ports and marinas and recreational and ecotourism boats that apply and fulfill a set of criteria related to Environmental Information and Education, Bathing Water Quality, Environmental Management, Safety and Services, Social Responsibility and Community Involvement.

The Blue Flag is a symbol of quality that distinguishes the efforts of several entities to make possible the coexistence of local development along with respect for the environment, raising the level of awareness of citizens in general, of decision-makers in particular, of the need to protect the marine, coastal and lake environment.

The right to hoist and maintain the Blue Flag by the holders / operators / managers of beaches, marinas and vessels, means that ABAE/FEE recognized, at the time of award, compliance with a series of strict environmental, educational, safety and accessibility. After this attribution, the respective holders / operators / managers assume responsibility for continuously ensuring compliance with all criteria underlying this attribution. Although ABAE/FEE can regularly carry out the verification of these criteria on the awarded sites, neither ABAE/FEE nor any of its directors, collaborators or members of the jury are liable to any person in the event of any non-compliance.
