The first Solar Energy Association in Brazil was created on February 17, 1978, with the objective of promoting the dissemination, encouragement and studies related to solar energy in the country, and had as its first headquarters the Solar Energy Laboratory of the Federal University da Paraíba (UFPB), in the city of João Pessoa - PB, and as president Prof. Cleantho da Câmara Torres. However, due to the discouragement of activities in the area of renewable energy sources and, in particular, solar energy, the Association ceased its activities in the mid-1980s, counting from that date on a representation of Prof. Arnaldo Moura Bezerra and Dr. Randolpho Lobato, who kept the institution's flame burning for all these years. As a result of an initiative taken in the city of Vigo, Spain, in September 2004, Brazilian researchers participating in the VII Iberoamerican Congress of Solar Energy (CIES), expressed their willingness to reorganize the Brazilian Association of Solar Energy (ABENS), with the aim of to bring together all professionals involved in research, development, education, promotion and direct and indirect applications of solar energy.
