About us

Established in 1996, NZ Landcare Trust is an independent charitable organisation. It is one of the only national, non-government organisations working with the land user community to encourage and support sustainable land and water management.

The organisation has flourished thanks to its practical, community-based approach. Led by freshwater ecologist Dr Nick Edgar, the Trust's head office can be found in Hamilton, based within the grounds of the University of Waikato.

A dedicated team of experienced Regional and Project Coordinators are based throughout the country - and this is a key feature of the Trust and its long-standing success.

The Trust brings together and unifies diverse interest groups, such as those from the dairy industry, landowners, recreational land users, and many more.

This is achieved by including representatives from these groups on our Board of Trustees from Federated Farmers of New Zealand; Federated Mountain Clubs; Federation of Maori Authorities; Fish and Game New Zealand; Ecologic Foundation; Rural Women New Zealand; and Royal Forest and Bird Society of New Zealand.
