About us
The Andaman Nicobar Environment Team (ANET) is a multidisciplinary research hub, environmental conservation and education centre in the Andaman Islands. ANET's aim is to address issues of contemporary significance to the islands and to develop effective conservation strategies based on a sound understanding of the islands’ diverse social-ecological systems. ANET proposes to do this through independent interventions focusing on both environmental sustainability and livelihood security, as well as collaborations and facilitation of engagements by organisations with similar visions and goals. ANET does not limit its focus to any single disciplinary approach or conceptual lens in its approaches, however, our philosophical positioning aligns strongly with socially inclusive conservation as opposed top-down, imposed protectionism. Established in 1993 as an initiative of the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust (MCBT), ANET was born out of a series of path-breaking surveys on crocodiles and turtles by researchers from the MCBT led by Zai and Romulus Whitaker, and Satish Bhaskar. Over the years, along with its own activities, ANET has also facilitated research and collaborative partnerships with several government and civil society organisations such as the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) and Dakshin Foundation.
