About us

BlocPower is a Brooklyn, New York-based building decarbonization company whose stated mission is to make buildings 'smarter, greener, and healthier for all,' with a particular focus on communities that have historically been left out of the clean-energy transition. Rather than constructing new buildings, BlocPower's business is entirely about renovating and retrofitting existing houses and multifamily apartment buildings: it manages electrification and energy-efficiency retrofit projects for small and mid-sized buildings, including multifamily residences, commercial properties, and community centers, converting them from fossil-fuel heating to efficient, all-electric heat pump systems.

Founded in 2014, BlocPower has, by its own account, completed more than 1,200 retrofit measures across more than 1,100 buildings nationwide, with earlier company communications citing more than 1,200 buildings retrofitted in New York State alone. The company uses proprietary software, branded BlocMaps, to analyze a building's energy profile and electrification potential, manage financing and leasing of new equipment, run the retrofit project, and monitor performance afterward — an approach designed to make clean-energy upgrades financially accessible to building owners and tenants who could not otherwise afford the upfront cost. The company reports that its retrofits save building owners between 20% and 70% on annual energy costs while improving indoor comfort and health for residents.

BlocPower's stated impact figures include more than 9,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions reduction, over 9.5 million BTU/h of heat pump capacity deployed, roughly 172,000 MMBtu of energy savings, more than 4,000 people trained through its workforce-development programs, over 700 job placements, and nearly 2,800 certifications earned by program participants, spanning more than 5,100 city blocks (figures as of 12/31/23 per the company's own reporting). The company's decarbonization-focused work has been recognized by the White House, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and TIME Magazine, and it has raised venture financing from investors including Microsoft's Climate Innovation Fund and high-profile individual backers.
