About us

Brave New Eco is a Melbourne, Australia-based sustainable building and renovation design studio based at 421 Sydney Road, Brunswick, VIC. The practice specialises in tailored design and consulting services for both new and existing homes, with a retrofit-driven design approach centred on resourcefulness: the studio spends significant time observing the inherent qualities of an existing building and, wherever possible, works to transform what already exists rather than starting over, in what it describes as a deeply resourceful and respectful approach to renovation.

Brave New Eco integrates interior-space retrofitting with exterior living design, sustainable technologies, and building alterations to create cohesive, interconnected outcomes for existing properties, and offers dedicated 'future-proofing' consultations that comprehensively assess a home's retrofit potential — identifying changes that improve thermal and energy efficiency, interior health, and functionality as part of an integrated design resolution. The studio applies permaculture design principles to both built and garden environments, uses non-toxic paints, sealants, and materials to support occupant health, restores and re-interprets existing furnishings and building elements rather than defaulting to new production, and specifies sustainably produced, renewable and biodegradable textiles in place of conventional (often exploitative) textile-industry products.

The studio's stated philosophy embraces 'old + new' — letting a design emerge from the tension between an existing building's history and new interventions, rather than imposing a single aesthetic theme — and extends its sustainable design ethos to commercial and workplace projects for values-driven clients.
