Now is when we keep hearing "chestnuts roasting on an open fire" and so many expect to be able to add that activity to their holiday gatherings. Remember that all chestnuts in the northern hemisphere were harvested this last fall. Depending upon how the grower, the distributor, the shipper and the grocer handle the chestnuts, you could have a great experience or you could be sorely disappointed. Chestnuts are perishable and if you find them in your grocery next to the in-shell pecans and almonds, be very suspicious. Even in the refrigerated section, they are at the end of their shelf life, so be cautious when buying them.
