About us

KALAM is a Portuguese-headquartered (with operations across Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and the United States) company specialising exclusively in the conservation, restoration, and rehabilitation of old and historic buildings, with a business history approaching 40 years. The company's work spans complex rehabilitation of historic buildings, restoration of cultural heritage, energy-efficiency improvements to existing structures, and complete renovations and updates, with its own in-house multidisciplinary team of restorers, master craftspeople (specialists in lead and zinc work, woodworking, architectural element reproduction, stucco, and sgraffito), and Fine Arts graduates directing each intervention.

KALAM has completed more than 40 interventions on UNESCO World Heritage monuments and building complexes, restoring landmark historic-centre buildings in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, Valencia, and Toledo, cathedrals including Santiago de Compostela and Seville (an uninterrupted 8-year restoration), and the Basílica del Pilar in Zaragoza. In Portugal specifically, the company has carried out the full rehabilitation of historic Pombaline-era buildings in central Lisbon — an architectural style developed after the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake as one of Europe's first systematised earthquake-resistant construction responses — and structural rehabilitation projects that combine seismic-consolidation engineering with heritage-sensitive restoration.

The company operates a dedicated Project Support Department (DAP) offering technical studies, diagnostics, and specialist advice to architects and heritage teams, and has extended its restoration and rehabilitation work internationally, including the Vergara and Pereira Palaces in Chile, the former Velasco Sarrá Palace (now the Spanish Embassy) in Havana, Cuba, Santo Domingo Cathedral in the Dominican Republic, and heritage building restoration across New York, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Florida in the United States.
