MAPNA was established in 1992 to implement thermal power plant projects. The successfully completed projects for construction and development of Arak Power Plant and Montazer Ghaem Power Plant together with increasingly growing domestic demand for energy in various sectors prompted the Iranian Ministry of Energy and Iran Power Development Co (IPDC) to enter into contracts with MAPNA for constructing 30 gas-fired power stations. The contract for 30 gas-fired power stations was later called the “30-Turbine Project” in MAPNA. In 1999, an EPC contract was made by and between IPDC and MAPNA to cover this project valued at over one billion Euros. MAPNA and IPDC joined efforts to realize the objectives defined under the scope of the project which included construction of gas-fired power stations in different Iranian provinces including Tehran, Kerman, Fars, Kurdistan, and Khorasan. The objectives included technology transfer, domestic design and manufacturing of relevant equipment, enhanced engineering capabilities, and improved management knowledge for power plant projects. MD1 was established in 1999 within MAPNA Group based on the “30 Gas Turbines Project”. Following the reorganization of MAPNA, the successful project for constructing 30 gas turbines was registered as the first independent incorporation within MAPNA family called “Power Plants Construction & Development- MD1” and it was decided that 30 turbines would continue to operate at 2544 MW using 16 power stations together with four additional power plant projects developed within MD-1.
