About us

Neil Kelly is a Pacific Northwest design/build remodeling, home performance, and solar energy company serving Portland, Seattle, Eugene, and Bend, that has been renovating existing homes since 1947, giving it one of the longest continuous operating histories of any company in this research. Neil Kelly states its path toward formal sustainability commitments began in the 1960s, and in 2013 the company earned Certified B Corporation status, verified by the nonprofit B Lab against standards covering social and environmental performance, legal accountability, and public transparency — making its 'old sustainability policy,' in practical terms, more than half a century in the making.

The company's president, Tom Kelly, frames remodeling and maintaining existing homes as innately sustainable because it extends the usable life of a structure rather than demolishing it, and Neil Kelly approaches each project — kitchens, bathrooms, whole-house remodels, additions, ADUs, and conversions — with a goal of meeting a client's needs for decades to come, selecting products and materials that balance aesthetics and budget with performance and sustainability criteria, and recommending energy-efficiency and health improvements be built into every project even when that isn't the client's primary goal. The company also operates its own solar energy and handyman services divisions. Internally, Neil Kelly completed a major sustainability-focused renovation of its own Portland office in 2020, including a seismic retrofit, high-efficiency lighting and HVAC, water-saving plumbing fixtures, a 30kW solar electric system, and additional EV chargers, and it runs ongoing programs to reduce waste, incentivize staff to bike or take public transit to work, and evaluate and recycle materials removed from client homes during deconstruction.

On the community side, Neil Kelly supports organizations including Habitat for Humanity, the Architectural Heritage Center, Oregon Environmental Council, ReBuilding Center, Sustainable Northwest, and United Way of the Columbia-Willamette, hosts annual remodeling workshops that donate proceeds to Habitat for Humanity, and maintains a dedicated diversity, equity, and inclusion committee.
