Increasing the sustainability of development by de-coupling growth from natural resources is of crucial importance. Companies around the globe encounter today’s challenges such as the changing energy generation mix and efforts to de-carbonize, securing fuel and supply at reasonable prices, comply with global regulations on emissions and optimizing operational efficiency and customer service.

Climate change is threatening today’s world by destabilizing fragile balances created over centuries among country’s natural resources; thus, limiting the effects of climate change is on the priority list of governments and private companies. Minimizing energy imports, securing fresh water resources and protecting the natural environment through a sustainable waste management system are core business concerns of many institutions.

Water, once an abundant natural resource, is becoming a more valuable commodity due to droughts and overuse. Awareness of the global importance of preserving water for ecosystem services has recently emerged, after loosing more than half of the world’s wetlands during the 20th century, along with their valuable environmental impact. Increasing urbanization pollutes clean water supplies and much of the world still does not have access to clean, safe water, while energy-hungry desalination is becoming more widely used.

With so many companies and governments looking for ways to reduce their energy consumption, manage their water resources, wastewater, emissions and solid wastes — because of cost, environmental concerns or the need to comply with regulations, the investments in projects that deliver on those needs keep being large and further growing.
