About us

RetrofitWorks is a UK not-for-profit cooperative — legally an Industrial & Provident Society (Registration No. 32147R) rather than a conventional company — that unites independent installers, tradespeople, suppliers, and community groups around a shared goal: improving the energy efficiency of existing homes across the UK. Founded in 2013, RetrofitWorks positions itself as a 'one-stop shop' for retrofit, coordinating whole-house upgrades such as insulation, low-carbon heating, and renewable technology installation through its network of vetted member businesses, with quality assured by the cooperative's own staff and internal policies rather than by any single installer acting alone.

The cooperative's own published history traces more than a decade of expansion: its founding as a not-for-profit cooperative in 2013; completion of its first major retrofit project in 2014; growth of its member network to more than 100 organizations, from installers to community groups, by 2016; the 2018 launch of large-scale local-authority retrofit schemes including Cosy Homes London and Cosy Homes Oxfordshire (RetrofitWorks also runs equivalent schemes in Sussex, Surrey, and Essex); industry recognition for its retrofitting approach and social impact in 2020; continued expansion of services and introduction of new technologies through 2022; and a 2023 celebration of ten years of impact, with the cooperative citing thousands of homes retrofitted and a 'significant contribution' to the UK's Net Zero goals.

RetrofitWorks describes its mission as lowering energy bills, creating healthier homes, and helping the UK achieve Net Zero, while its stated vision is to become the UK's leading one-stop shop for retrofit, upskilling the installation workforce and boosting local employment along the way. The organization frames sustainability as a three-part commitment — environmental (cutting carbon and using sustainable materials and renewable solutions), economic (supporting local installer businesses and reducing energy costs for homeowners), and social (tackling fuel poverty and improving wellbeing) — and case studies published on its site describe real retrofit projects in Levenshulme (Greater Manchester), East Oxford, and Chorlton (Greater Manchester).
