About us

Soil Consultants, Inc. was founded in 1951 to provide geotechnical engineering and materials testing services in the Charleston area. Since its formation, Soil Consultants, Inc. has expanded its service scope to include contract drilling, non-destructive testing, and environmental consulting services. Our geographic service area also has expanded from the Charleston area to include all of South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina.

Since 1951, we have remained committed to our founding principle of providing superior customer service. Our core values of integrity, honesty, open communication, and fair pricing permit our projects to proceed smoothly, permit our deadlines to be met, and permit our budgets to be met.

Stewardship of the firm has been provided by Wm. Kenneth Johnson, P.E., who served as president between 1951 and 2001, and by M. Brian Johnson, who became president in 2001 when Mr. Johnson became Chairman. Since founding, Soil Consultants, Inc. has been privately-held.

In recognition of its majority female ownership, Soil Consultants, Inc. was certified by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) in 2010 as a disadvantaged business enterprise (DBE) for geotechnical and environmental drilling, construction materials testing, non-destructive testing, and special inspections as required by Chapter 17 of the International Building Code.
