About us

Sudurnes Science and Learning Center is a research center with emphasis on natural science and related subjects. Southwest Iceland Nature Research Institute and The University of Iceland´s Research Center in Sudurnes are part of the center. The main focus for The University of Iceland´s Research Center in Sudurnes has been on research and teaching using the clean water (e.g. ecotoxicology), organisms from the wild (e.g. new species for aquaculture or fisheries) and prevention and cure of diseases in aquaculture or in the wild. Southwest Iceland Nature Research Institute collects and stores information and data regarding nature in the Sudurnes region. The main focus has been on ecological research and teaching.

Sudurnes Science and Learning Center is a Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark partner. The area was designated by UNESCO in 2015. UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.
