Last Update: May 05, 2025About us
The Ministry of Environment, Lands and Agricultural Development (MELAD) of Kiribati, based in Bikenibeu, is the principal government authority responsible for the stewardship of the country’s environment, land management, and agricultural development. As a key agency in the Republic of Kiribati, MELAD plays a vital role in ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources while addressing the environmental and food security challenges facing the island nation. MELAD's responsibilities encompass a wide range of areas including land administration, protection of biodiversity, climate change adaptation, and promotion of sustainable agriculture. Given Kiribati’s unique geographic vulnerability to rising sea levels and environmental degradation, the Ministry focuses heavily on building community resilience, safeguarding freshwater resources, and ensuring sustainable land use planning. In the field of agriculture, MELAD supports the development of climate-resilient farming practices, local food production, and soil conservation. It works closely with farmers, traditional landowners, and international partners to strengthen food security and promote eco-friendly agricultural techniques suited to atoll environments. Environmental conservation is a central part of MELAD’s mission. The Ministry leads efforts in marine and terrestrial ecosystem protection, waste management, and climate action. Through national programs and global cooperation, MELAD is committed to preserving Kiribati’s natural heritage for future generations while fostering sustainable development across its islands.
