About us

The **South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI)** is a public entity under the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, tasked with leading biodiversity research, conservation, and policy support in South Africa. Established to promote the sustainable use and protection of the country’s rich biological heritage, SANBI plays a central role in advancing scientific knowledge, managing botanical gardens, and supporting national biodiversity planning.

SANBI conducts cutting-edge research on South Africa’s unique ecosystems, species, and ecological processes, contributing vital data to inform environmental decision-making. It collaborates with academic institutions, government bodies, and international organizations to address challenges such as habitat loss, climate change, and invasive species.

The Institute manages a network of national botanical gardens across different biomes, which serve not only as conservation hubs but also as centers for environmental education, tourism, and public engagement. These gardens showcase the country’s remarkable plant diversity and play a role in ex situ conservation.

Additionally, SANBI provides expert guidance for the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and supports policy development on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Through its research, policy input, and public outreach, SANBI is committed to securing a thriving, resilient natural environment that benefits all South Africans.
