About us
The Washington State Department of Ecology is the state’s environmental protection agency, dedicated to preserving, protecting, and enhancing Washington’s land, air, and water resources for the benefit of current and future generations. Established in 1970 as one of the first state-level environmental agencies in the United States, the Department plays a key role in ensuring environmental quality through science-based policy, regulation, and public engagement. The Department of Ecology oversees a wide range of environmental programs, including air quality management, water resources protection, hazardous waste cleanup, shoreline management, and climate resilience. It issues permits, enforces environmental regulations, and provides guidance and support to industries, municipalities, and communities to help them comply with environmental laws. A major priority for the Department is addressing the effects of climate change, improving water quality in critical watersheds like the Puget Sound, and cleaning up contaminated sites across the state. It also works to promote environmental justice and equitable access to clean, healthy environments for all Washingtonians. Through partnerships with tribal governments, local agencies, non-profits, and the public, the Department of Ecology strives to develop sustainable solutions that balance ecological health with economic development. Its work is grounded in transparency, science, and a commitment to protecting Washington’s diverse natural landscapes.
