Problems

  • Garbage is an environmental problem in Kiev

All the environmental problems of the capital of Ukraine are 100% caused by the hands of the inhabitants of the megalopolis. Household waste occupies a special place. Their number is so great that neither private nor state garbage collection companies can dispose of them quickly. Sadly, the central districts of the capital are littered with garbage.

Not far from the Pyrogovo Park and Museum in the green zone of the Goloseevsky district, there is garbage dump No. 6, a real environmental disaster for Kyiv.
Every year several hundreds of new residential buildings are built in Kyiv, and the buildings grow like mushrooms. It is worth noting that each construction site is hundreds of tons of construction waste.
  • Landfill №6 pollutes the environment

Landfill №6 was opened in the 80s in a waste clay pit, but no one could have imagined that Kyiv would be built up so quickly. Because of this, the landfill began to "grow" upwards and now reaches several dozen meters in height.

The landfill, designed for construction waste, was declared full in the mid-2010s. At that time Kyiv authorities promised to either reclaim the landfill or close it completely.

Landfill №6 is mainly used for dumping construction and bulky waste. The landfill has been set up in an abandoned quarry, and the trash has already reached ground level. Once upon a time, the Korchevatsk construction materials factory was located there.

Earlier, residents of nearby districts appealed to the Kyiv authorities with a request to conduct an inspection at the landfill, to ban burning garbage on it, to remove the management of the open joint-stock company to which it is subordinated, as well as to establish control over the landfill. According to them, the territory is managed by JSC "Kyivspetstrans".

Ecologists and activists sound the alarm, apply to the authorities, and hold rallies to close the landfill. However, everything is useless, because there is no alternative, and the amount of construction waste only increases every year.

Besides, according to the activists, at landfill №6, there is an unbearable stench, because, over the past few years, all kinds of waste have been dumped there, which only worsens the situation.
The Kyiv City State Administration also agrees that the landfill is full, but they say there is no way to solve the problem.
  • What are the dangers of this kind of landfill?

Landfills like this one are in critical condition, damaging the environment and the health of residents. Three thousand tons of garbage are dumped there per day. And this mixed household waste usually contains many different components: food, batteries, light bulbs, and unused medications. All of this rots, forming toxic liquid effluent - leachate. Products of the decomposition of organic substances, and corrosion of metals, including heavy metals and microplastics get into it. This poison then enters the soil, poisoning nearby rivers and lakes.

Unfortunately, the Ukrainian waste management system does not allow the development of an environmentally friendly and economically profitable waste recycling industry. The country does not have enough recycling capacity, and therefore a large amount of waste is buried illegally, and companies that are supposed to remove and dispose of garbage, just dump it in unauthorized dumps.

Law enforcement agencies are conducting investigations at construction and bulky waste landfill No. 6 in Kyiv.
Every year, laboratory tests of soil and air samples are carried out at landfill No. 6. They also remind us that Kyiv is the only city in Ukraine, where the streams of household and construction waste are separated and stored in two different landfills. This made it possible to reduce the risk of fires.

The State Environmental Inspection appealed to the court to close landfill No. 6.
The area of the landfill was four times larger than allowed. The littering of territories not intended for garbage disposal was reported on his Facebook page by Andrei Malevany - head of the State Environmental Inspectorate. The official also added photos from the landfill to the publication on social networking sites. According to Malevanyy, as a result of a survey of the landfill inspectors found that the area of the landfill, which is 5 hectares, reaches 20 hectares due to illegally used land. In addition, several violations of operating rules were fixed.

State Environmental Inspection assessed the damage caused to the amount of approximately UAH 55 million. On the fact of littering of lands not designated for burial, two criminal proceedings were violated. SEI also applied to the Economic Court of Kyiv with a claim for compulsory collection of damages and to the Kyiv District Administrative Court with the requirement to stop the activities of Kommunalnik.

July 28

At the landfill of construction and bulky waste No. 6 began investigative actions of the Security Service of Ukraine in relation to PJSC "Kyivspetstrans". According to the court order, samples of soil, air and water are taken here.

Regarding the subject of the investigation PJSC "Kyivspetstrans" states that at the landfills #5 and #6 the system of environmental monitoring is implemented and functioning.

According to representatives of the Pirogov CM self-organization body (SPO), the operation of landfill No. 6 for large-sized and construction waste threatens their health and homes. Multi-ton dump trucks destroy Pirogov Road and cause dangerous vibrations in people's private homes. The landfill has stopped burning and smoking only in the last two years, but it continues to pose an environmental hazard.

Residents argue that the landfill has long expired, and they began to deliver not only construction waste but also municipal solid waste (MSW), in which organic matter rots, releasing toxic leachate.

PJSC "Kievspetstrans", which services landfill #6, denied this information. It seems that nobody is going to reclaim this territory in the nearest future.

March 05

Residents of the Holosiiv district complain that landfill No. 6 poisons their lives - literally and figuratively. The landfill, which is located next to his home, is unpleasant to see, and the fires that break out on it poison the air in a radius of 4 kilometers around.

Residents of the surrounding areas appealed to the Kyiv authorities with a request to conduct an inspection at the landfill, to prohibit the burning of garbage on it, to remove the management of the open joint-stock company to which it is subordinate, as well as to establish control over the landfill.
