Algeria has kicked off an ambitious national tree-planting campaign aimed at planting one million trees across the country, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change. The program was officially launched in Tizi Ouzou province by Yacine Mehdi Oualid, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Mustapha Hidaoui, Minister in charge of the Supreme Council of Youth, alongside Fouad Maalla, President of the Algeria Verde (Green Algeria) association.A national effort for a greener future
The launch ceremony took place in the municipality of Ait Agouacha, where the ministers led the first planting operations. The campaign is a joint initiative between the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Fisheries, and the Algeria Verde association, designed to ensure a unified and impactful approach to reforestation and environmental restoration. This collaborative effort emphasizes Algeria’s vision for sustainable development, aiming to combat deforestation, land degradation, and the negative effects of climate change. Planting trees is one of the most effective natural solutions to absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂), enhance biodiversity, and protect soil and water resources.Local action, national impact
In Tizi Ouzou alone, 25,000 trees of various native species are being planted across different municipalities. The species are carefully selected based on local climate and soil conditions to ensure high survival and long-term growth. This regional initiative mirrors the broader national strategy to engage communities and distribute environmental resources more equitably across Algeria.Youth and community involvement
The Algerian government views this campaign as an investment in future generations. By engaging youth organizations, local communities, and volunteers, the initiative fosters a culture of environmental responsibility and green awareness. The Green Algeria association plays a crucial role in providing technical guidance and mobilizing citizens to participate actively in the tree-planting drives.A step toward a sustainable Algeria
The Million Trees Campaign represents a major step toward achieving Algeria’s environmental and climate goals. Beyond its ecological benefits—such as improving air quality, restoring ecosystems, and preventing erosion—the project also contributes to economic resilience and public health. Through strong collaboration between government institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the Algerian people, this initiative demonstrates a clear and proactive strategy to build a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable Algeria.
