In a landmark environmental decision, stingless bees native to the Amazon rainforest have become the first insects globally to be granted legal rights, a move advocates believe could reshape conservation efforts worldwide. Across large areas of the Peruvian Amazon, these small, non-stinging native bees are now legally protected, with the recognized right to exist, survive, and thrive within their natural ecosystems. Stingless bees have been cultivated by Indigenous Amazonian communities since pre-Columbian times. Scientists consider them among the most critical pollinators in the rainforest, supporting biodiversity, forest regeneration, and ecosystem stability. However, their survival is increasingly threatened by a combination of climate change, deforestation, pesticide exposure, and competition from non-native European and Africanised honeybees. Conservationists have warned that without intervention, many stingless bee species could disappear.A turning point for the rights of nature
“This ordinance represents a fundamental shift in how humans relate to nature,” said Constanza Prieto, Latin America director at the Earth Law Center. “It acknowledges stingless bees as legal subjects with rights and recognizes their essential role in sustaining ecosystems.” The groundbreaking ordinances were passed in two Peruvian municipalities, following years of research and advocacy led by Rosa Vásquez Espinoza, founder of Amazon Research Internacional. Espinoza has spent years working directly with Indigenous communities to document stingless bee species, their habitats, and traditional knowledge.Scientific discoveries sparked global attention
Espinoza’s research began in 2020 after analyzing stingless bee honey used in Indigenous communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results were astonishing. Laboratory analysis revealed hundreds of bioactive compounds, many with anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antioxidant, and even anti-cancer properties. The chemical diversity of the honey highlighted the bees’ immense medicinal and scientific value. Motivated by these findings, Espinoza led multiple expeditions into remote Amazon regions, collaborating with Indigenous experts to record traditional beekeeping practices and ecological observations passed down for generations.Declining populations and hidden threats
Although stingless bees are found throughout tropical regions worldwide, nearly half of the planet’s 500 known species live in the Amazon, where they pollinate over 80% of rainforest plant life, including cacao, coffee, and avocado crops. Yet Indigenous beekeepers reported that bees were becoming harder to locate. What once required minutes of searching now took hours. Even more concerning, traces of toxic pesticides were discovered in honey collected far from industrial agriculture, signaling widespread environmental contamination.Lack of recognition delayed protection
For centuries, only European honeybees—introduced during colonial times—received official recognition in Peru. This exclusion created a funding and research gap, making conservation nearly impossible. Without formal classification, stingless bees could not qualify for protection or research funding. To break this cycle, Espinoza and her team launched a large-scale ecological mapping project in 2023, working closely with government agencies and conservation bodies. Their findings directly linked deforestation to stingless bee population decline, contributing to the passage of a 2024 national law recognizing stingless bees as Peru’s native bee species—a critical step under Peruvian environmental law.Competition from aggressive invasive bees
Research also revealed a growing threat from Africanised honeybees, originally developed in Brazil during the 1950s. These aggressive hybrids now outcompete stingless bees for nesting sites and resources. In Peru’s Avireri Vraem Biosphere Reserve, Indigenous elders described how Africanised bees had overtaken traditional stingless bee habitats, sometimes attacking humans and forcing communities to abandon beekeeping sites.Legal rights for bees set global precedent
In October, the municipality of Satipo became the first in the world to pass an ordinance granting legal rights to stingless bees. A second municipality, Nauta in the Loreto region, followed in December. • Under the new laws, stingless bees are entitled to: • The right to exist and reproduce • Protection of their natural habitat • Pollution-free environments • Ecologically stable climate conditions • Legal representation in cases of environmental harm Environmental law experts say the ordinances establish a legal framework requiring habitat restoration, pesticide regulation, climate adaptation strategies, and expanded scientific research.Growing international momentum
A global petition calling for nationwide protection has already gathered hundreds of thousands of signatures, and conservation groups in Bolivia, the United States, and Europe are exploring similar legal approaches for wild bees in their regions. Indigenous leaders say the law validates centuries of traditional knowledge. “The stingless bee gives us food and medicine,” said Asháninka leader Apu Cesar Ramos. “Protecting it also protects our culture, our rainforest, and our future.”
