In a bold step toward clean energy leadership, China has announced plans to construct the world’s largest solar farm, covering 610 square kilometers (235 square miles) on the Tibetan Plateau — roughly the size of Chicago.Accelerated Growth in Renewable Energy

The country is now outpacing global peers in solar panel deployment, and the impact is becoming evident: carbon emissions in China fell by 1% during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Unlike previous reductions tied to economic slowdowns, this time emissions are falling despite a 3.7% increase in electricity demand, thanks to a surge in clean energy generation — primarily from solar, wind, and nuclear power. According to a recent analysis by Lauri Myllyvirta of the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, this is the first indication of a structural, long-term decline in China’s emissions. The country added 212 gigawatts of solar capacity in just six months — exceeding the entire U.S. solar capacity of 178 GW as of the end of 2024.Clean Energy Becomes Dominant
Solar power has now surpassed hydropower in China and is on track to overtake wind energy as the nation’s largest clean energy source. From January to June 2025, China also added 51 GW of wind power capacity. Li Shuo, Director of the China Climate Hub at the Asia Society Policy Institute, called the emissions plateau a global turning point. “This is a rare glimmer of hope,” he noted, showing that a country can reduce emissions while maintaining economic growth.A Solar Megaproject with National Impact
The upcoming mega solar farm will feature over 7 million panels, generating enough electricity to power 5 million households. The project covers vast, underpopulated areas of western China, raising logistical challenges in delivering electricity to urban centers in the east. One solution lies in constructing high-capacity transmission lines. A new line already links Qinghai province with Henan. Two more lines — including one to Guangdong in the southeast — are planned.Grid Modernization is Crucial
China’s power grid, still optimized for coal-fired plants, needs major updates to accommodate the variable nature of renewable energy. Myllyvirta emphasized that “this will require major changes to both grid operation and coal plant flexibility,” marking a significant infrastructure challenge for policymakers.
