China has launched construction of a 300,000-ton-per-year demonstration facility that will transform mining waste into high-grade titanium-rich materials using an innovative low-temperature recovery process. Developed by industrial pyrolysis specialist Niutech, the project represents a major step toward sustainable mining, resource recovery, and lower-carbon industrial production. Located in Linyi, Shandong Province, the facility is designed to process approximately 300,000 tons of titanium-bearing mining tailings annually. By recovering valuable minerals from waste that was previously considered uneconomical to process, the plant is expected to become Asia’s largest demonstration project for strategic mineral recovery from mining waste. The company states that the technology has undergone evaluation by a national professional organization, which concluded that it has achieved an internationally advanced technological standard.Innovative technology turns mining waste into valuable resources
Every year, global mining operations generate an estimated 16 billion tons of tailings, including enormous quantities of titanium-iron and vanadium-titanium magnetite waste. Much of this material still contains significant amounts of recoverable metals but has remained unused due to high processing costs and energy demands. To overcome these limitations, Niutech has developed a low-temperature pyrolysis and in-situ reduction technology that extracts valuable titanium-rich materials far more efficiently than traditional methods. Unlike conventional smelting processes, which require extremely high temperatures, the new system operates below 700°C (1,292°F), with typical industrial temperatures ranging between 550°C and 600°C (1,022–1,112°F). The process also makes productive use of waste plastics and other organic waste, converting them into reducing gases that assist in extracting titanium from mining residues.Circular economy approach improves energy efficiency
The integrated recovery system combines solid waste recycling, tailings enrichment, and energy recovery within a single industrial process. During low-temperature pyrolysis, waste-derived reducing gases react directly with titanium-bearing tailings, eliminating the need for the extreme temperatures traditionally required for efficient mineral reduction. According to Niutech, the technology achieves a reduction rate exceeding 50% while operating at substantially lower temperatures than conventional titanium extraction methods. The company also reports impressive environmental performance: • More than 93% of waste heat is recovered and reused • Overall energy consumption is reduced by over 36% • Carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions decrease by up to 40% compared with traditional titanium reduction technologies These improvements could significantly reduce both operating costs and the environmental footprint of titanium production.Meeting growing demand for critical minerals
