At the Port of Los Angeles, a groundbreaking pilot project by Eco Wave Power is turning the motion of the ocean into clean, renewable energy. The system, which uses floating blue paddles attached to a pier, has successfully completed operational testing as of August 27, 2025, marking a major milestone for wave energy in the United States.How Eco Wave Power’s system works
At the heart of the project is the Energy Conversion Unit (ECU), a technology that transforms the up-and-down movement of waves into usable electricity. • Floating paddles (or “floaters”) rise and fall with the waves. • The motion activates hydraulic pistons that push fluid through pipes. • The pressure spins a turbine inside the ECU, generating electricity. • The ECU itself is housed in two 20-foot shipping containers stationed onshore. Eco Wave Power’s pilot uses eight floaters, installed along an existing concrete pier in the harbor. This dock-mounted design makes the system more affordable and resilient than offshore installations, as the floaters can be lifted during storms to avoid damage.A step toward large-scale wave power
Eco Wave Power, founded in Israel in 2011, sees this pilot as the beginning of something much larger. If the demonstration convinces California regulators, the company plans to deploy hundreds of floaters along the 13-kilometer breakwater that shields the Port of Los Angeles. This full-scale installation could generate enough electricity to power 60,000 U.S. households, making wave power a serious contender in the renewable energy mix.
