The%20Environment%20Committee%20of%20European%20Parliament%20has%20voted%20to%20ensure%20sustainable%20use%20of%20pesticides%20and%20reduce%20their%20use%20by%20at%20least%20half%20by%202030.%0A%0AMembers%20of%20Parliament%20(MEPs)%20voted%20to%20also%20reduce%20the%20use%20of%20%E2%80%9Cmore%20hazardous%20products%E2%80%9D%20by%2065%20percent%20as%20compared%20to%20the%20average%20from%202013%20to%202017%2C%20a%20press%20release%20from%20European%20Parliament%20said.%0A%0A%E2%80%9CThis%20vote%20brings%20us%20one%20step%20closer%20to%20significantly%20reducing%20chemical%20pesticide%20use%20by%202030.%20It%20is%20very%20positive%20that%20we%20were%20able%20to%20agree%20on%20feasible%20compromises%20in%20an%20ideologically%20charged%20and%20industry-dominated%20discussion%2C%E2%80%9D%20said%20MEP%20Sarah%20Wiener%2C%20rapporteur%20on%20sustainable%20use%20of%20pesticides%2C%20in%20the%20press%20release.%0A%0AMEPs%20are%20asking%20each%20member%20nation%20to%20adopt%20their%20own%20national%20strategies%20and%20targets%20based%20on%20products%E2%80%99%20hazard%20levels%2C%20amount%20of%20the%20substances%20sold%20annually%20and%20their%20affected%20agricultural%20area.%20The%20European%20Commission%20will%20then%20review%20them%20and%20decide%20if%20targets%20are%20on%20track%20to%20meet%20EU%202030%20goals%20or%20need%20to%20be%20modified.%0A%0AAdditionally%2C%20EU%20member%20countries%20must%20have%20rules%20for%20at%20least%20five%20crops%20where%20reducing%20chemical%20pesticide%20use%20would%20have%20the%20most%20impact.%0A%0AMEPs%20want%20to%20ban%20toxic%20pesticides%20in%20%E2%80%9Csensitive%20areas%2C%E2%80%9D%20other%20than%20those%20authorized%20to%20be%20used%20for%20biological%20control%20and%20organic%20farming%2C%20plus%20a%20surrounding%20buffer%20zone.%20Examples%20of%20these%20areas%20are%20parks%2C%20public%20paths%2C%20recreation%20areas%2C%20playgrounds%20and%20Natura%202000%20areas%20throughout%20Europe.%0A%0A%E2%80%9CPractical%20solutions%20have%20been%20found%20for%20example%20on%20sensitive%20areas%20where%20member%20states%20can%20make%20exceptions%20if%20needed.%20It%20was%20particularly%20important%20for%20me%20to%20ensure%20that%20independent%20advice%20on%20preventive%20measures%20based%20on%20integrated%20pest%20management%20would%20be%20offered%20free%20of%20charge%20to%20European%20farmers%2C%E2%80%9D%20Wiener%20said%20in%20the%20press%20release.%0A%0AEU%20nations%20are%20obligated%20to%20ensure%20toxic%20pesticides%20are%20used%20only%20as%20a%20%E2%80%9Clast%20resort%2C%E2%80%9D%20according%20to%20the%20rules%20in%20Integrated%20Pest%20Management.%0A%0AIn%20order%20to%20provide%20farmers%20with%20better%20access%20to%20alternative%20substances%2C%20MEPs%20want%20the%20commission%20to%20set%20a%20target%20date%20for%20increasing%20sales%20of%20lower-risk%20pesticides%20that%20is%20six%20months%20following%20the%20start%20of%20the%20new%20regulation.%0A%0A%20Any%20changes%20that%20arise%20from%20the%20new%20rules%20would%20happen%20gradually%20to%20minimize%20impacts%20on%20food%20security.%0A%0AMEP%20Marie%20Arena%2C%20a%20Belgian%20Socialist%20politician%2C%20said%20the%20result%20would%20benefit%20both%20the%20environment%20and%20farmworkers%2C%20as%20%E2%80%9Cabusive%20use%20of%20pesticides%20makes%20people%20sick%2C%E2%80%9D%20as%20well%20as%20wiping%20out%20bee%20populations%2C%20AFP%20reported.%0A%0AThe%20commission%20must%20look%20at%20the%20differences%20in%20pesticide%20use%20on%20imported%20agri-food%20and%20agricultural%20products%20in%20comparison%20to%20EU%20produce%20by%20December%20of%202025%2C%20and%2C%20if%20necessary%2C%20propose%20measures%20to%20make%20sure%20imports%20are%20up%20to%20EU%20standards.%20The%20export%20of%20pesticides%20banned%20in%20the%20EU%20would%20also%20be%20prohibited.%0A%0AParliament%E2%80%99s%20new%20mandate%20is%20scheduled%20to%20be%20adopted%20during%20the%20plenary%20session%20of%20November%2020%20to%2023%20of%20this%20year.%20It%20will%20then%20begin%20negotiations%20with%20EU%20member%20nations.%0A%0AThe%20proposal%20is%20one%20of%20a%20group%20of%20measures%20aimed%20at%20reducing%20the%20EU%20food%20system%E2%80%99s%20environmental%20footprint%2C%20as%20well%20as%20mitigating%20economic%20losses%20caused%20by%20biodiversity%20loss%20and%20climate%20change.
