As air slowly sinks within the high-pressure system, it compresses, becoming even hotter and drier. Initially centered over Germany and the Baltic region, the heat dome is expected to shift westward before settling over the English Channel for several days. Although it should gradually weaken later in the week, unusually warm conditions are likely to persist across much of Western Europe. Meteorologists also note that the atmosphere physically expands during such events. At the center of the heat dome, atmospheric pressure levels have risen significantly higher than average, illustrating the remarkable strength of this weather system.
