Built for 100,000 Years of Protection One of the most remarkable aspects of Onkalo is its longevity. The facility is engineered to safely contain nuclear waste for up to 100,000 years, allowing radioactive materials to decay to safe levels over time. The repository will eventually hold thousands of tons of nuclear waste in a vast network of tunnels extending tens of kilometers underground. Once full—expected sometime in the next century—the facility will be permanently sealed, leaving no need for future maintenance or human oversight. Why Finland Chose This Solution Finland’s decision to build Onkalo stems from a national policy requiring the country to manage its own nuclear waste domestically, rather than relying on temporary storage or exporting the problem elsewhere.
