This transition will focus heavily on electrifying transportation systems and residential buildings, alongside expanding the use of EVs and energy-efficient heating solutions. Energy analyst Neil Makaroff believes France could lead Europe in tackling the energy crisis structurally. He highlights the country’s advantages, including its strong nuclear infrastructure, low-carbon electricity supply, and growing renewable energy capacity—especially in offshore wind and solar power. France has also set a target for electricity to account for 60% of total energy consumption by 2030. State-owned utility EDF Group recently unveiled a €240 million investment package designed to accelerate electrification nationwide. Key initiatives include: • €30 million in subsidies to help transport companies convert diesel trucks into electric heavy-duty vehicles, with average support of €15,000 per truck • €50 million investment to build 180 charging stations for long-haul electric trucks across France within three years • €80 million fund to attract electricity-intensive industries, offering ready-to-use industrial sites with pre-installed grid connections to reduce setup delays Additionally, around 80,000 low-income households will receive grants of up to €1,000 to replace gas or oil heating systems with heat pumps, making energy-efficient upgrades more accessible. EDF CEO Bernard Fontana stated that the initiative demonstrates a concrete commitment to strengthening France’s energy independence and industrial competitiveness. How France compares in Europe’s energy transition Across the European Union, renewable energy continues to gain ground. In 2024, renewables accounted for 47.5% of total electricity generation—an increase from the previous year.
