Global temperatures are expected to rise more than 1.4°C above pre-industrial levels in 2026, according to leading meteorologists, as ongoing fossil fuel emissions continue to overheat the planet and drive extreme weather events worldwide. Forecasts from the UK Met Office suggest that while 2026 may be marginally cooler than 2024—the hottest year ever recorded at 1.55°C above pre-industrial averages—it will still rank among the four warmest years since records began in 1850. Scientists warn that the growing concentration of heat-trapping gases is destabilizing the climate conditions that have allowed human civilization to flourish. The Met Office projects that global temperatures in 2026 will range between 1.34°C and 1.58°C above the 1850–1900 baseline, increasing the likelihood of severe weather extremes and dangerous climate tipping points. “The past three years have almost certainly exceeded 1.4°C, and 2026 is expected to become the fourth consecutive year to cross that threshold,” said Adam Scaife, lead climate scientist at the Met Office. “Before this recent warming surge, global temperatures had never surpassed 1.3°C.”Paris climate target under increasing threat
At the Paris Climate Agreement signed a decade ago, world leaders pledged to limit long-term global warming to 1.5°C (2.7°F). While the goal is calculated as a 30-year average—meaning it has not yet been officially breached—individual years and months are now regularly exceeding the limit. “We saw the first temporary breach of 1.5°C in 2024, and our 2026 outlook indicates this could happen again,” explained Nick Dunstone, a Met Office climate expert. “This underlines how quickly the world is closing in on the Paris Agreement threshold.”Record heat trends confirmed by global climate agencies
Recent data from EU climate scientists indicates that 2025 is almost certain to finish as either the second- or third-hottest year on record, aligning with projections released by the World Meteorological Organization late last year. According to Copernicus, the European Union’s Earth observation program, average global temperatures from January through November were 1.48°C above pre-industrial levels—matching anomalies recorded in 2023, the previous second-warmest year. Earlier Met Office forecasts estimated that 2025 temperatures would fall between 1.29°C and 1.53°C above pre-industrial norms, further confirming the accelerating pace of global warming.El Niño, La Niña, and the role of human activity
Natural climate patterns, including a strong El Niño, contributed to record heat in 2023 and 2024. These conditions transitioned into a weaker La Niña phase in 2025, slightly moderating temperatures. However, scientists stress that these natural cycles occur against a far more powerful driver: human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. Pollution from coal-fired power plants, vehicles, heating systems, and widespread deforestation continues to trap heat in the atmosphere while reducing nature’s ability to absorb carbon. A United Nations report released in October revealed that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels reached record highs last year. In addition to relentless fossil fuel use and massive wildfire emissions, researchers are increasingly concerned that the planet’s natural carbon sinks—such as forests and oceans—may be losing their capacity to absorb CO₂, worsening the climate crisis.
