Google has announced a major sustainability initiative in partnership with AI-driven recycling technology company AMP Robotics to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from landfill waste. This collaboration is designed to help the tech giant remove 200,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere by 2030 through an innovative waste conversion process.Turning organic waste into long-lasting carbon storage
Under the agreement, AMP’s advanced artificial intelligence systems will sort and divert organic materials from municipal solid waste before it decomposes in landfills. Instead of releasing CO₂ and potent methane — a greenhouse gas with far greater short-term warming power — the recovered organic waste will be transformed into biochar, a stable carbon-rich material that can hold carbon for centuries. Biochar not only sequesters carbon long-term but can also be used to enhance soil quality, reduce odors, and control pollution when applied as a landfill cover or in other industrial applications.Supporting local communities and scaling climate action
The project will be implemented at one of the United States’ largest recycling initiatives in Virginia, where AMP’s technology processes hundreds of thousands of tons of waste annually. The partnership also aims to improve air quality in nearby communities and develop standardized methods for measuring how waste diversion paired with carbon removal reduces methane emissions.
