The Hanford Nuclear Reservation in southeastern Washington, once the core of U.S. plutonium production during the Cold War, is entering a historic new phase in its cleanup mission. After decades of storing radioactive byproducts, the site is preparing to transform toxic nuclear waste into a safer, more stable form.Final approval for vitrification process
State regulators have granted the final permit required to launch a vitrification process—a highly engineered method that converts liquid radioactive and chemical waste into solid glass. Workers will remove the hazardous materials from aging, leaking underground tanks, blend the waste with chemical additives, and heat the mixture to over 2,000°F (1,000°C). The molten blend is then cooled into durable glass logs stored in stainless steel containers. Although the waste remains radioactive, vitrification locks it into a stable form, drastically reducing the risk of it leaching into the soil or contaminating the nearby Columbia River. “We are standing at a pivotal moment in Hanford’s history,” said Casey Sixkiller, Director of the Washington State Department of Ecology.From Manhattan project to modern-day cleanup
Hanford’s 600-square-mile site sits at the confluence of the Snake and Columbia rivers—a landscape sacred to Native American tribes for thousands of years. In 1943, the U.S. government seized the land for the Manhattan Project, displacing more than 2,000 residents to build the world’s first full-scale plutonium production facility. Tens of thousands of workers were recruited nationwide, most unaware that they were producing material for the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hanford eventually expanded to nine nuclear reactors, producing plutonium until the last reactor was shut down in 1987. By 1989, cleanup agreements were signed between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the EPA, and the State of Washington to address widespread contamination.Leaking tanks and ongoing contamination
Hanford still contains 177 underground tanks holding approximately 56 million gallons (212 million liters) of radioactive and chemically hazardous waste. Built for a 25-year lifespan, the tanks are now decades past their intended use. More than one-third have leaked, with three tanks currently confirmed to be releasing waste into the environment. Historically, the site discharged untreated effluent into the Columbia River and inadequately contained waste in open ponds, leading to groundwater contamination and long-term environmental damage. Since the 1980s, vitrification technology has been recognized as one of the most effective methods for stabilizing nuclear waste. Hanford’s cleanup includes two waste treatment plants: one newly approved for low-level radioactive waste, and another still under construction for high-level waste. To date, more than $30 billion has been invested in the effort. The DOE is required to begin vitrification by October 15, 2025, under its agreement with Washington State and the EPA. The first treatment phase will include radioactive isotopes such as cesium and strontium, which pose significant long-term hazards.Leadership challenges and federal responsibility
Concerns about leadership and accountability recently surfaced when Roger Jarrell, a top DOE cleanup overseer, was dismissed. Reports suggested potential delays, raising alarm among state officials and prompting Senator Patty Murray to demand firm commitments from Energy Secretary Chris Wright. Wright later reassured the public, confirming that vitrification operations would begin on schedule: “Although challenges remain, we are committed to launching operations by October 15, 2025. Protecting both our workforce and surrounding communities is our top priority.” Washington Governor Bob Ferguson praised the state’s approval process while pressing the federal government to honor its cleanup obligations: “Our state has done its part to prepare the Waste Treatment Plant. Now it’s time for the federal government to live up to its responsibilities and clean up what they left behind.”
