Malawi has officially commissioned a 20 MW utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS), marking a major milestone in the country's clean energy transition. The facility, located in Lilongwe, is the only large-scale battery storage project currently operating in southern Africa outside of South Africa and Namibia, helping improve grid reliability in one of the world's least-electrified nations. The new battery storage system was activated by the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) over the weekend as part of the country's broader strategy to strengthen its electricity network against the growing impacts of climate change. Malawi depends heavily on hydropower, with the Shire River supplying the majority of its electricity. However, prolonged droughts and rising temperatures linked to the El Niño climate pattern are reducing river flows and placing increasing pressure on electricity generation.Battery storage to improve energy security
Access to electricity remains a significant challenge in Malawi, where only around 25% of the population currently has reliable power. The government has set an ambitious target of increasing national electricity access to 70% by 2030. The need for a more resilient energy system became clear after Cyclone Freddy caused severe damage to hydropower infrastructure three years ago. Hydroelectric plants still generate approximately two-thirds of Malawi's electricity, making the country's power supply highly vulnerable to extreme weather events. While solar power capacity has expanded to roughly 100 MW out of Malawi's total installed generation capacity of 580 MW, integrating battery storage is expected to make renewable energy far more reliable by balancing supply and demand and reducing outages.Supporting essential services and economic growth
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Energy Minister Jean Mathanga described the battery project as a critical investment in Malawi's future. According to the minister, dependable electricity is essential for hospitals to provide life-saving healthcare, schools to deliver quality education, and businesses to operate efficiently while supporting long-term economic development.More battery projects planned
The newly commissioned battery storage facility is only the beginning of Malawi's energy storage expansion. The government plans to develop three additional battery energy storage systems with a combined capacity of 60 MW across two more cities. The first project was financed through the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). ESCOM estimates the installation will help connect approximately 600,000 additional households to the electricity grid while reducing average blackout durations from around four hours to less than two hours.Reliable electricity brings hope for local businesses
Frequent power interruptions continue to affect businesses throughout Malawi. Adrian Masoambeta, a local welding shop owner, said recurring blackouts have made it difficult to generate enough income to cover his family's expenses, including his children's college tuition. He expressed optimism that the new battery storage system will significantly improve electricity reliability, giving small businesses the stable power they need to grow and support local communities. As Malawi accelerates investments in battery energy storage, renewable energy, and grid modernization, the country is taking important steps toward improving energy access, increasing climate resilience, and supporting sustainable economic development across the region.
