MIT%20engineers%20have%20developed%20ultralight%20fabric%20solar%20cells%20that%20can%20quickly%20and%20easily%20turn%20any%20surface%20into%20a%20power%20source.%20These%20durable%2C%20flexible%20solar%20cells%2C%20which%20are%20much%20thinner%20than%20a%20human%20hair%2C%20are%20glued%20to%20a%20strong%2C%20lightweight%20fabric%2C%20making%20them%20easy%20to%20install%20on%20a%20fixed%20surface.%20They%20can%20provide%20energy%20on%20the%20go%20as%20a%20wearable%20power%20fabric%20or%20be%20transported%20and%20rapidly%20deployed%20in%20remote%20locations%20for%20assistance%20in%20emergencies.%20They%20are%20one-hundredth%20the%20weight%20of%20conventional%20solar%20panels%2C%20generate%2018%20times%20more%20power-per-kilogram%2C%20and%20are%20made%20from%20semiconducting%20inks%20using%20printing%20processes%20that%20can%20be%20scaled%20in%20the%20future%20to%20large-area%20manufacturing.%0A%0ABecause%20they%20are%20so%20thin%20and%20lightweight%2C%20these%20solar%20cells%20can%20be%20laminated%20onto%20many%20different%20surfaces.%20For%20instance%2C%20they%20could%20be%20integrated%20onto%20the%20sails%20of%20a%20boat%20to%20provide%20power%20while%20at%20sea%2C%20adhered%20onto%20tents%20and%20tarps%20that%20are%20deployed%20in%20disaster%20recovery%20operations%2C%20or%20applied%20onto%20the%20wings%20of%20drones%20to%20extend%20their%20flying%20range.%20This%20lightweight%20solar%20technology%20can%20be%20easily%20integrated%20into%20built%20environments%20with%20minimal%20installation%20needs.%0A%0A%E2%80%9CThe%20metrics%20used%20to%20evaluate%20a%20new%20solar%20cell%20technology%20are%20typically%20limited%20to%20their%20power%20conversion%20efficiency%20and%20their%20cost%20in%20dollars-per-watt.%20Just%20as%20important%20is%20integrability%20%E2%80%94%20the%20ease%20with%20which%20the%20new%20technology%20can%20be%20adapted.%20The%20lightweight%20solar%20fabrics%20enable%20integrability%2C%20providing%20impetus%20for%20the%20current%20work.%20We%20strive%20to%20accelerate%20solar%20adoption%2C%20given%20the%20present%20urgent%20need%20to%20deploy%20new%20carbon-free%20sources%20of%20energy%2C%E2%80%9D%20says%20Vladimir%20Bulovi%C4%87%2C%20the%20Fariborz%20Maseeh%20Chair%20in%20Emerging%20Technology%2C%20leader%20of%20the%20Organic%20and%20Nanostructured%20Electronics%20Laboratory%20(ONE%20Lab)%2C%20director%20of%20MIT.nano%2C%20and%20senior%20author%20of%20a%20new%20paper%20describing%20the%20work.%0A%0A%0AJoining%20Bulovi%C4%87%20on%20the%20paper%20are%20co-lead%20authors%20Mayuran%20Saravanapavanantham%2C%20an%20electrical%20engineering%20and%20computer%20science%20graduate%20student%20at%20MIT%3B%20and%20Jeremiah%20Mwaura%2C%20a%20research%20scientist%20in%20the%20MIT%20Research%20Laboratory%20of%20Electronics.%20The%20research%20is%20published%20today%20in%20Small%20Methods.%0A%0ASlimmed%20down%20solar%0ATraditional%20silicon%20solar%20cells%20are%20fragile%2C%20so%20they%20must%20be%20encased%20in%20glass%20and%20packaged%20in%20heavy%2C%20thick%20aluminum%20framing%2C%20which%20limits%20where%20and%20how%20they%20can%20be%20deployed.%0A%0ASix%20years%20ago%2C%20the%20ONE%20Lab%20team%20produced%20solar%20cells%20using%20an%20emerging%20class%20of%20thin-film%20materials%20that%20were%20so%20lightweight%20they%20could%20sit%20on%20top%20of%20a%20soap%20bubble.%20But%20these%20ultrathin%20solar%20cells%20were%20fabricated%20using%20complex%2C%20vacuum-based%20processes%2C%20which%20can%20be%20expensive%20and%20challenging%20to%20scale%20up.%0A%0AIn%20this%20work%2C%20they%20set%20out%20to%20develop%20thin-film%20solar%20cells%20that%20are%20entirely%20printable%2C%20using%20ink-based%20materials%20and%20scalable%20fabrication%20techniques.%0A%0ATo%20produce%20the%20solar%20cells%2C%20they%20use%20nanomaterials%20that%20are%20in%20the%20form%20of%20a%20printable%20electronic%20inks.%20Working%20in%20the%20MIT.nano%20clean%20room%2C%20they%20coat%20the%20solar%20cell%20structure%20using%20a%20slot-die%20coater%2C%20which%20deposits%20layers%20of%20the%20electronic%20materials%20onto%20a%20prepared%2C%20releasable%20substrate%20that%20is%20only%203%20microns%20thick.%20Using%20screen%20printing%20(a%20technique%20similar%20to%20how%20designs%20are%20added%20to%20silkscreened%20T-shirts)%2C%20an%20electrode%20is%20deposited%20on%20the%20structure%20to%20complete%20the%20solar%20module.%0A%0AThe%20researchers%20can%20then%20peel%20the%20printed%20module%2C%20which%20is%20about%2015%20microns%20in%20thickness%2C%20off%20the%20plastic%20substrate%2C%20forming%20an%20ultralight%20solar%20device.%0A%0ABut%20such%20thin%2C%20freestanding%20solar%20modules%20are%20challenging%20to%20handle%20and%20can%20easily%20tear%2C%20which%20would%20make%20them%20difficult%20to%20deploy.%20To%20solve%20this%20challenge%2C%20the%20MIT%20team%20searched%20for%20a%20lightweight%2C%20flexible%2C%20and%20high-strength%20substrate%20they%20could%20adhere%20the%20solar%20cells%20to.%20They%20identified%20fabrics%20as%20the%20optimal%20solution%2C%20as%20they%20provide%20mechanical%20resilience%20and%20flexibility%20with%20little%20added%20weight.
