The%20UK%20has%20this%20week%20confirmed%20its%20intention%20to%20join%20the%20UNFSS%2C%20which%20commits%20members%20to%20halve%20food%20waste%20globally%20by%202030.%20The%20UK%20joins%20the%20likes%20of%20Italy%2C%20Australia%20and%20the%20US%20in%20becoming%20a%20member.%0A%0AAn%20estimated%209.5%20million%20tonnes%20of%20food%20are%20wasted%20every%20year%20in%20the%20UK%2C%20while%20more%20broadly%2C%20more%20than%20one-third%20of%20all%20produced%20food%20is%20wasted.%20The%20UK%20will%20share%20its%20expertise%2C%20namely%20through%20the%20research%20and%20workings%20of%20WRAP%20to%20help%20combat%20food%20waste%20at%20home%20and%20abroad.%0A%0AMinister%20Rebecca%20Pow%20said%3A%20%E2%80%9CThe%20UK%2C%20where%20food%20waste%20has%20fallen%2021%25%20per%20person%20since%202007%2C%20is%20rightly%20recognised%20as%20a%20global%20leader%20in%20tackling%20both%20domestic%20and%20international%20food%20waste.%20Joining%20the%20UNFSS%20Coalition%20will%20enable%20us%20to%20work%20further%20with%20other%20countries%20to%20solve%20this%20enormous%20issue.%E2%80%9D%0A%0AThe%20commitment%20forms%20part%20of%20the%20government%E2%80%99s%20Environmental%20Improvement%20Plan%20to%20build%20a%20%E2%80%9Ctruly%20circular%20and%20sustainable%20economy%E2%80%9D.%0A%0AThe%20Government%20published%20its%20food%20strategy%20in%20June%202022.%20The%20UK%20Government%20has%20maintained%20that%20the%20strategy%20does%20address%20the%20biggest%20systemic%20challenges%20across%20the%20food%20value%20chain%2C%20including%20rising%20food%20costs%2C%20childhood%20hunger%2C%20public%20health%20and%20environmental%20sustainability.%0A%0ATo%20this%20latter%20point%2C%20agriculture%20was%20the%20source%20of%2010%25%20of%20the%20UK%E2%80%99s%20emissions%20in%202019%20and%2047%25%20of%20England%E2%80%99s%20methane%20emissions%20specifically%20in%202019%2C%20according%20to%20official%20Government%20figures.%20This%20makes%20it%20a%20key%20challenge%20on%20the%20road%20to%20net-zero.%20With%2070%25%20of%20England%E2%80%99s%20land%20used%20for%20farming%2C%20farming%20approaches%20also%20have%20a%20major%20knock-on%20impact%20on%20the%20state%20of%20nature%20across%20the%20country.%0A%0AMore%20than%20200%20large%20food%20businesses%20already%20measure%20their%20food%20waste%20as%20part%20of%20the%20WRAP-IGD%20Food%20Waste%20Reduction%20Roadmap%20and%20the%20strategy%20is%20consulting%20on%20ways%20to%20improve%20reporting%20on%20this%20topic%20for%20larger%20businesses.%0A%0ACommenting%20on%20the%20announcement%2C%20Liz%20Goodwin%2C%20senior%20fellow%20and%20director%20of%20Food%20Loss%20and%20Waste%20at%20the%20World%20Resources%20Institute%2C%20said%3A%20%E2%80%9CThe%20UK%20has%20been%20a%20clear%20leader%20in%20tackling%20food%20loss%20and%20waste%20for%20many%20years%2C%20so%20I%20am%20delighted%20that%20it%20is%20joining%20the%20Food%20is%20Never%20Waste%20Coalition%20where%20it%20will%20be%20a%20clear%20role%20model%20for%20others%20and%20will%20help%20promote%20focus%20on%20this%20important%20issue.%0A%0A%E2%80%9CWe%20are%20now%20just%20seven%20years%20away%20from%202030%20and%20it%20is%20imperative%20that%20we%20all%20scale%20up%20our%20efforts%20to%20reduce%20food%20loss%20and%20waste%2C%20which%20is%20essential%20if%20we%20are%20to%20meet%20climate%20agreement%20targets%20and%20create%20a%20sustainable%2C%20resilient%20food%20system.%E2%80%9D%0A%0ADisposal%20discretions%0A%0AThe%20announcement%20is%20timely.%20New%20research%20based%20on%20a%20survey%20from%20Waitrose%20warns%20that%20almost%20three%20million%20households%20across%20the%20UK%20may%20not%20be%20disposing%20of%20food%20waste%20responsibly.%0A%0AThe%20survey%20found%20that%20while%2061%25%20of%20UK%20households%20acknowledge%20that%20food%20waste%20is%20damaging%20to%20the%20environment%2C%20just%2021%25%20have%20access%20to%20curbside%20food%20waste%20collection%20and%20therefore%20throw%20leftover%20food%20into%20general%20waste%20streams.%0A%0AAlmost%20half%20(43%25)%20claimed%20that%20they%20mistrust%20their%20local%20authorities%20to%20deal%20with%20waste%20responsibility%2C%20while%2029%25%20claimed%20that%20separating%20food%20waste%20was%20%E2%80%9Ctoo%20much%20effort%E2%80%9D.%0A%0AJohn%20Lewis%20Partnership%E2%80%99s%20director%20of%20ethics%20and%20sustainability%2C%20Marija%20Rompani%20said%3A%20%E2%80%9CWhen%20we%20throw%20food%20away%2C%20we%20waste%20the%20precious%20resources%20it%E2%80%99s%20taken%20to%20grow%2C%20package%20and%20transport%20it%20%E2%80%93%20and%20as%20it%20rots%20in%20landfill%2C%20it%20produces%20methane%2C%20a%20greenhouse%20gas%20more%20potent%20than%20carbon%20dioxide.%0A%0A%E2%80%9CThe%20simple%20action%20of%20throwing%20food%20in%20the%20bin%20is%20therefore%20more%20damaging%20to%20our%20planet%20than%20people%20often%20realise.%20Ideally%2C%20we%20should%20strive%20to%20eliminate%20food%20waste%20entirely%20but%20if%20necessary%2C%20it%E2%80%99s%20critical%20that%20households%20that%20have%20access%20to%20curbside%20food%20waste%20collection%20actually%20use%20it.%E2%80%9D
