In a remarkable scientific discovery, researchers have uncovered a vast white coral reef deep beneath the Gulf of Naples, marking one of the most significant marine findings in recent years. The Italian National Research Council (CNR) revealed the discovery, calling it a milestone for marine biodiversity studies in the Mediterranean. The reef was identified during an EU-funded oceanographic mission, which deployed a remotely operated submarine to explore the Dohrn Canyon — a deep marine valley just off the coast of southern Italy. According to the CNR, “the explorations revealed massive coral structures over two meters wide, spread along a vertical wall more than 80 meters high.” These formations are made up of deep-water hard corals, often known as “white corals” due to their colorless appearance. In addition to white corals, the reef hosts black corals, solitary corals, sponges, and other vital marine organisms. Fossilized remains of ancient oysters and corals were also found embedded in the structures — described by the CNR as “geological testimonies of a distant past.” Mission leader Giorgio Castellan called the discovery “exceptional for Italian seas”, noting that coral bioconstructions of this size and complexity have never before been recorded in the Dohrn Canyon and are rarely observed elsewhere in the Mediterranean Sea.Key insights for conservation and future research
