  • Blocking the flow of the river Kalchik, Ukraine.

Kalchik River is a right tributary of the Kalmius River (Azov Sea basin) and originates in the Pologovsky district of the Zaporizhzhia region, on the border with the Donetsk region.
On the river is the Starokrymskoe reservoir. The length of the river is 88 km.
The Kalchyk River has historical value for Ukraine and also maintains the balance of water salinity in the Sea of Azov.
Kalchik River runs through the entire Mariupol, provides the Sea of Azov with fresh water and is an integral part of the ecosystem.
The salinity of the Sea of Azov is increasing, including due to the construction of the Crimean Bridge by the occupiers. Salinity has risen significantly, the sea suffers a lot from jellyfish in the summer.
On the watershed between the rivers Berda and Kalchik, there is a reserve "Stone Graves", a branch of the Ukrainian steppe reserve.
Mirror carp, grass carp, silver carp and other fish are found in Kalchik River.
Russian terrorists, who captured and destroyed Mariupol, ruining the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, destroy the region's ecosystem as well, thus continuing their abuse of the Ukrainian city. The Russians damaged the hydraulic structure of the Kalchik River and it started to become waterlogged.
The flow of the river is almost completely stopped, because of which the plant and animal worlds of Kalchik are doomed. In addition, this will lead to an increase in the salinity of the sea, and consequently, will create favorable conditions for jellyfish and will cause significant harm to fish populations.
In Mariupol, Donetsk region, the occupation authorities dismantled a brick mini-dam on the Kalchyk River, which protected the river from waterlogging.
They are building a block of the Kalchik River from cinder blocks. This can lead to the death of fish not only in the river but also in the Sea of Azov if such building material gets into the water.
The dam would interfere with fish spawning, which means that in the future this could lead to a reduction in the marine fauna in the Sea of Azov, into which the Kalchik flows.
The flow of the river has slowed down, its waters have become gray-green and have a strong smell of decay, and Kalchik itself has begun to turn into a swamp.
A fetid pus stands along the entire course of the river in the city. In addition to the destruction of the city's natural water supply, the flow of fresh water to Azov is decreasing.
Because the occupiers filled up the river, its level will begin to fall, and the Kalmius River will also have corresponding consequences.
The damage from Russia's actions to the ecosystem of Ukraine does not end only with the consequences of hostilities, the Russians specifically continue to cause damage every day with the help of excavators.
The Russians have set up a military training ground on the territory of the Azov National Natural Park in Zaporizhzhia, where the mobilized are drilled. The military of the Russian Federation destroys the landscape with mortar fire, cuts down forests for the construction of fortifications, and destroys animals and fish.
The actions of the invaders destroy the ecosystem of the Sea of Azov and harm the surrounding flora and fauna.

2023

April

A hydraulic structure was destroyed on Kalchik River, which ensured a normal flow. Because of this, she started getting waterlogged.
In Mariupol, the occupiers filled up the Kalchyk River and channeled the water through a pipe. The river was filled up during the repair of one of the bridges in the Kalmius district of the city.
This can become a real ecological and natural disaster for both the city and the Sea of Azov.

2005

During the construction of the Extreme Park and the improvement of the Lugopark, an artificial hydraulic structure was built in the area of the bridge over the Kalchik River on Makar Mazaya Street.
His task was to ensure the appropriate water level and the speed of the water flow in the river, which made it possible to avoid swamping the Kalchik River in the city area.
