Guinea's mangroves, by the numbers
- Guinea had roughly 360,000 hectares of mangrove forest in 1976. Today, around 200,000 hectares remain — a loss of more than 150,000 hectares in under 40 years (Selly Camara, Guinean environmental expert, via Xinhua, 2024). - Mangrove cover nationally has declined by an estimated 30% since the early 1980s (World Bank / WACA Program). - Between 2010 and 2015 alone, Guinea lost roughly 7,000 hectares of mangrove (IUCN Restoration Initiative). - Guinea's mangroves are currently degrading at an estimated 4% per year. - Around Conakry specifically, satellite imagery shows the vegetated "fingers" of the Kaloum Peninsula that were still visible in 1986 had thinned to almost nothing by 2000, as the city's population grew from under 40,000 in the 1960s to nearly 2 million by 2006 (NASA Earth Observatory).
Mangrove Loss and Coastal Habitat Degradation

Mangroves are particularly important as nursery grounds for fish and shrimp and as natural protection against shoreline erosion. Solid Waste, Wastewater and Coastal Pollution
Conakry faces major shortcomings in solid-waste, wastewater and drainage infrastructure. Untreated wastewater, inadequate drainage, unmanaged solid waste, plastics, and industrial and port-related pollution are entering coastal waters, threatening human health and aquatic ecosystems. The government's Conakry sanitation project was launched to improve wastewater, stormwater and solid-waste management, and to address saturated or hazardous landfill sites and uncontrolled waste disposal affecting the coast.
Coastal Erosion, Flooding and Climate Vulnerability
Guinea's coastal zone, including Conakry, is identified as strategically important and vulnerable to sea-level rise, coastal erosion, flooding, saltwater intrusion, and damage to fisheries, agriculture and coastal infrastructure. Impacts on Coastal Livelihoods
Rapid urban growth and rising demand for land, fuelwood, fisheries resources and infrastructure have increased pressure on Conakry's coastal ecosystems. Mangrove cutting, coastal development and inadequate waste management threaten habitats that support fisheries and help protect shorelines. The stakes are largely economic. A 2020 World Bank valuation found Guinea's mangroves support coastal rice farming worth an estimated $616 million a year — more than 50,000 farmers depend on mangrove-protected paddies for roughly 23% of the country's national rice production. Mangrove-linked fisheries add a further $232 million annually, and the same forests provide an estimated $232 million a year in flood protection alone. Losing mangrove cover around Conakry doesn't just mean disappearing forest — it threatens food security and flood defense for hundreds of thousands of people directly.

Community-Based Mangrove Restoration

Restoration in progress
Restoration is already underway in Guinea, offering a template for Conakry-area efforts. In the Tristao Islands, Guinée Ecologie (a BirdLife International partner) restored more than 1,400 hectares of mangrove between 2019 and 2022. A follow-on project in the Konkouré Delta, running 2023-2026 with the Ministry of Environment and the West Africa Coastal Areas (WACA) Resilience Investment Project, targets 500 hectares through a mix of replanting, assisted natural regeneration, and reduced pressure on existing forest — including distributing fuel-efficient cooking stoves to cut demand for mangrove wood.
