Problems

  • Decline of Mangrove Forests

  • Unsustainable Exploitation

    Mangroves in parts of the Saloum Delta are harvested for firewood and construction timber, and to support oyster and shellfish harvesting, and in some areas this extraction has contributed to habitat loss.   • Impact of Climate Change

    Climate variability is a significant long-term risk for the Saloum River Estuary. Severe rainfall deficits during the Sahelian drought of the 1970s-1990s sharply increased salinity across the estuary and drove major mangrove dieback; rainfall subsequently recovered from the late 1990s onward and contributed to mangrove regeneration, but future rainfall variability remains an important climate risk rather than a settled trend in either direction.

  • Loss of Biodiversity

    The Saloum River Estuary, part of the Delta du Saloum UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Ramsar wetland, is home to a rich diversity of species, including large breeding and wintering colonies of migratory waterbirds (UNESCO records more than 30,000 pairs of royal terns), fish, shellfish, and other wildlife. This is a valuable and well-documented practice. However, a 2020 peer-reviewed study (Andrieu et al., Forest Ecology and Management) found that roughly 96% of the mangrove area gained in the Delta between 2000 and 2015 occurred through spontaneous natural regeneration rather than planting, and planted seedlings can have poor survival under hypersaline conditions. Community programs are therefore most valuable as environmental education, monitoring and habitat-protection efforts that support natural regeneration, rather than as the primary driver of mangrove recovery.

Sustainable Resource Management Practices

Implementing sustainable harvesting practices for firewood, timber, and oysters is important for the long-term health of the Saloum River Estuary. This includes limiting extraction rates and promoting responsible oyster-harvesting techniques, such as selective harvesting, rotational collection sites, and seasonal rest periods, that several Delta communities already document using to protect habitats while supporting local economies (Ndour et al., IntechOpen). Promoting alternative energy sources to reduce reliance on mangrove firewood is a sensible complementary goal, though it should be presented as a recommendation rather than a program already documented across the whole Delta.

Mangrove Restoration Projects
