About us
Due to its regional political significance, Egypt is an important partner for Germany in the field of international cooperation. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working in Egypt since 1956. Egypt faces numerous development challenges. These include growing demand for energy against a background of dwindling natural resources and increasing population density in urban areas. Unemployment is also increasing, especially among young people, and adequate educational opportunities are lacking. Parts of the population, such as women and young people, also face structural disadvantages. GIZ works in Egypt on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It also implements projects on behalf of other German ministries, the European Union and international organisations. GIZ’s activities support the Egyptian Government’s Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS): Egypt Vision 2030 in the following priority areas: - Climate and Energy - Environment and Natural Resources - Training and Sustainable Growth for Decent Jobs GIZ advises the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity on renewable energy and energy efficiency in order to reduce the climate impact of the country’s electricity production. It also helps partner institutions working in the field of urban development to improve living conditions in the country’s informal settlements with the involvement of their residents. GIZ runs a project designed to promote the more efficient use of water in agriculture in order to prevent future water shortages. It advises on general water supply improvements and on the management of wastewater and solid waste.
